GARDEN RAILWAY by Richard Halton
The Garden Railway certainly falls into the novelty layout category. It is "N Gauge" in the strictest terms but not "N Scale". The layout is in fact built to G scale using N gauge track and locomotives to represent a 7 ¼ inch gauge miniature railway. The layout has been around for a while and generations of children have enjoyed it at the many exhibitions that it attends. My own Grandson never tires of driving the train round and given its very limited operating potential this is quite surprising. It is just possible that some of the Dads taking their kids to exhibitions might have first seen it when their own Dads took them. Yes, it's that old.
The layout is often exhibited alongside a Medway Queen Preservation Society stand and has its own MQPS sales stand set up in one corner to provide a link. The model's great strength in this respect is that a train can be set running when the show opens and switched off when it closes. A locomotive change is made when boiler temperatures start to become too realistic! There's a lot of detail wedged into a small space and always something new to discover.
